The remains of a keep, covered box that always remains in the middle of the moat, is the last trace of an ancient castle built on the site of an ancient villa Carolingian and razed in 1531. Designed to defend the Ile de France against the invaders, it was besieged in 1118 by Henry I of England, then taken over by Philippe Auguste. it
The castle was surrounded by a moat fed by the Epte, with three wells and two cellars in support of attack: one is for weapons and other provisions. In the same vein, a tunnel was opened between the castle and the priory.
On the ruins of this ancient castle was built the present castle Beaumesnil.
