The construction of a castle:
In the Middle Ages, the building of a castle lasted a long time ... between 25 and 40 years depending on the size of the castle. The construction site was a real small town where lived and worked many artisans. It must be a dozen different trades to build a castle.
Requires shifting cultivators who are the first to respond to clear the field. The shifting cultivators were nomads who moved from one site to another castle. Their task was to cut trees and clear land to prepare for the construction of the castle.
The wood cut and used as fuel to the low quality and fine wood is intended for carpenters.
The carpenters were therefore present as the wood is one of the most used materials in the construction of the castle (frames, doors, but also scaffolding, truck ...)
The builders chose the land of castles built according to the place of the stone quarry.
The stone is extracted by the quarrymen who take the quarry large blocks. These blocks are then cut according to their quality by stonemasons.
A castle had to be solid. The walls should be thick and resistant to stone impact of the attackers. For the walls are solid, it was necessary that the stones are properly connected to-each other. This work was done by the masons who used the mortar to bond the stones together. The mortar is made from sand and lime (the ancestor of cement) in the lime-burner in a furnace.
It was still a lot of other odd jobs around the castle under construction: Potier, Chartier, Cordière, weaver, blacksmith, lumberjack ...
The boulders were lifted by machinery erected, squirrel cage, or winch drum (the ancestors of our modern cranes).
A castle must have been solid. The walls had to be thick and resist the projections of stones from the assailants. For the walls to be solid, the stones had to be properly bonded to each other. This work was carried out by the masons who used mortar to stick the stones together. The mortar is made with sand and lime (the ancestor of cement) by the heater in an oven.
There were still a lot of other small trades around the castle under construction: potier, chartier, cordière, basket-maker, blacksmith, bucheron ...
